Marine Mammals in our Backyard

Can we save the dolphins? Despite scientific advances and increased public interest, marine mammals still face serious challenges to their existence. Delving deeper than the world of Flipper, this course provides a multidimensional perspective on marine mammal ecology and conservation, concentrating on local species of dolphins and whales and the state of our ocean. Following an overview of marine mammal ecology and the dynamics of their social lives, instruction explores the long-term field research conducted in Los Angeles waters to help participants gain an appreciation of the animals in our own ocean “backyard” and promote awareness of conservation issues associated with them and their ecosystem.
